Northern Cree is a nine-time GRAMMY nominated powwow and round dance group from Treaty Six territory with 50 albums to their credit. The group was formed in 1982 by Charles Wood Jr., Earl Wood, Randy Wood, and Steve Wood.

Northern Cree performs at festivals and hosts pow wows with eight to 20 singers. The group is led by Steve Wood and includes Joel Wood, Marlon Deschamps, Shane Dion, Marcus Denny, Leroy Whitstone, Marvin Deschamps, Jordon Fiddler, Emerson Samson, Penny McGilvery, Dezi Chocan, Randall Paskemin, Jamon Paskemin, Gilbert Buffalo, Desmond Redcalf, Jonas Tootoosis, Ben Cardinal, Kyle Pasquayak, Shaina McGilvery, and Jayzer Littlewolfe.

Since 1999, Northern Cree has earned a total of 44 nominations and 18 awards for their music.


About Steve Wood
My name is Steve Wood and I am a 58 year old Nehiyaw (Cree) man. I have been married to Hilda Omeasoo-Wood for 37 years, and we have been blessed with 3 children. I am a school administrator by career and am also the founder/leader, and drumkeeper of Northern Cree. I am originally from the community of Saddle Lake AB., but have resided in Maskwacis AB. For the past 37 years. I speak, read and write the Nehiyaw (Cree) language, as well as try to teach others about the language and culture.

About Joel Wood
Tansi! Mikwanak kamohsakinat nisakason. My name is Joel Omeasoo-Wood. My REAL
name is “Feather Pick Up Man”, I am 32 years old and I am from Nipisihkopahk
(Maskwacîs) and Saddle Lake Band, both of which are located within Treaty 6 Territory.
I am a descendent of the Wandering Spirit Band. My parents are Steve and Hilda Wood. I
have been singing traditional and contemporary pow wow music my entire life and have
been a member of Northern Cree Drum for 23 years and counting. Northern Cree is
where I started and Northern Cree is where I continue to sing. I am also an Original
Style Grass Dancer! Ekosi maka, hiy hiy.
